Venice is an incredible city to visit and almost anywhere you choose to stay will do just fine since you can walk everywhere on the island. Some hotels are closer to Piazza San Marco or Rialto Bridge, but literally you are just a 15 minute walk to those attractions pretty much no matter where you book your room. I recently stayed in Venice and reserved a hotel about 2 minutes from Piazza San Marco called Hotel Colombina. The magical part of the trip was taking a water taxi right to the front entrance of the hotel (my wife love this). Hotel Colombina had rooms with high ceilings and marble bathrooms. For around $250/night we had an excellent hotel that was situated just off the beaten track in Venice. Now some people want water views of the Grand Canal and those hotels are often a little pricier.
